Edgin’s velocity had dimished in spring training, raising concerns there could be something wrong with him. After meeting with doctors, he and the team determined he needed to undergo surgery on his elbow.

“It was the best decision for my future and my family,” Edgin said in a statement. “The Mets stood behind me 100 percent. I’m disappointed, because we have a heck of a team. My mindset is to be ready to go on Opening Day 2016.”

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said the team will explore internal options to replace Edgin before exploring other options.

In 2014, Edgin had a dominant season for the Mets in his third Major League season. In 47 appearances, the 28-year-old Edgin went 1-0 with a 1.32 ERA to go with a 0.91 WHIP.
