In a last-ditch effort to woo voters, Benjamin Netanyahu headlined a rally in Tel Aviv Sunday night. Speaking to an estimated 20,000 right-wing supporters, the prime minister implored everyone to vote, saying there was a “real danger that a left-wing government will rise to power.”

Netanyahu’s Likud party is trailing his rival Isaac Herzog’s Zionist Union party in the polls.

Unlike the U.S., Israelis won’t choose a candidate when they head to the polls. Instead, they’ll choose a party. The leader of the party that wins is often the one who becomes prime minister after the president asks him or her to form a government.

In order for Netanyahu to win a fourth term in office, his Likud party needs to come out on top.

His supporters are hoping that even if Likud loses on election day, the right-wing bloc will still back Netanyahu’s bid to remain Israel’s prime minister. But the center-right parties may defect, so his victory is far from secure.
