Parole Granted for Killer of Pamela Smart’s Husband

iStock/Thinkstock(CONCORD, N.H.) — William Flynn, who was a teenager when he fatally shot the husband of his then-22-year-old lover, Pamela Smart, was granted parole Thursday.
He got the good news in a Maine prison cell while speaking by phone to the parole board in Concord, New Hampshire.
The case of Smart, a media coordinator at Winnacunnet High School, was the basis for the movie, To Die For. In real life, Smart convinced Flynn, who was 15 at the time, to kill Gregg Smart in 1990 because she feared losing everything in a divorce.
In his first time up before a parole board, Flynn, now 41, learned of his release from state prison. He had been initially convicted of second-degree murder and was given a 28-year sentence.
While in jail, Flynn got married, earned a GED and trained to become an electrician.
An accomplice, Patrick Randall, is up for parole next month. Two others involved in the murder plot have already been paroled.
Smart, on the other hand, is serving a lifetime sentence in a New York state prison without the possibility of parole.
She has steadfastly denied any involvement in her late husband’s murder although a recording of her, secretly taped by a teen intern she confided in, sealed her fate. Smart can be heard on the tape saying, “If you tell the [expletive] truth, you’ll send me to the slammer for the rest of my [expletive] life.”
