Lee has been bothered by the injury, which dates back to last season. He’s refused to undergo surgery, saying he’d rather retire then go under the knife. Instead, he’ll try and rehab the injury for the third time.

“We tried twice and it didn’t work, so it’s fairly likely that it will remain the same,” Lee said. “As we get closer to the threshold of being able to have the surgery or not to make it for next year, as we get closer to that I’ll have a decision to make and obviously we’ll know a lot more at that point.”

Lee, a former American League Cy Young winner, is entering the final guaranteed season of a $120 million, five-year contract. He’ll make $25 million this season and is eligible for a $12.5 million buyout next season.

If Lee is unable to successfully rehab his elbow, it will likely be the end of his 13-year career.
