Phillies Shut Down Cliff Lee
Published at(PHILADELPHIA, Pa.) — Cliff Lee will be riding the pine for a while as he attempts to recuperate from elbow soreness.
The Phillies temporarily shut Lee down and ordered an MRI. The exam revealed no ligament damage, but Lee will miss his next start.
“Any time it’s the elbow, you have to be concerned,” said Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. “We have to be concerned because it’s the area he felt something before.
“We don’t think it’s acute, but we have to be cautious.”
Since 2010, over 100 major league pitchers have undergone so-called Tommy John elbow ligament reconstruction surgery. According to pitching injury expert Glenn Fleisig, fatigue is a major contributor to the injury.
Lee started only 13 games last season as he dealt with elbow soreness. He went 4-5 with a 3.65 ERA.
