Russell made 50 percent of his shots and went 4 of 7 from 3-point distance, leading Ohio State (24-10) to their first tournament win since 2013.

The victory did not come easily for the Buckeyes. They fell behind by 12 in the first half before battling back to make it a one-point game at halftime. From that point on, there were nine lead-changes before the Buckeyes improved their NCAA Tournament record under head coach Thad Matta to 18-8.

Jae’Sean Tate had 12 points and eight boards while guard Shannon Scott dished out 10 assists in the victory.

Melvin Johnson scored 17 points for VCU (26-10) who is going home in their tournament opener for the second straight season.
