(TAMPA BAY, Fl.) — C.C. Sabathia allowed two runs over two innings in his first game action since undergoing knee surgery last season.
Sabathia’s season ended last July as he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a degenerative condition in his right knee. After the procedure Sabathia admitted that he also had a bone spur removed from the knee.
“Felt good. No complaints,” Sabathia said. “I was really nervous, more than normal. It was really weird.”
Sabathia, 34, has not been the same pitcher since 2011 when he had a 3.00 ERA with 230 strikeouts over 237 and a third innings pitched. His home runs allowed have climbed each year as he allowed 22 and 28 in 2012 and 2013 respectively. His ERA ballooned over the same time, growing to 3.28 in 2012 and 4.78 in 2013.
“My fastball was good. Command was pretty good,” Sabathia told ESPN after the game. “Just need to get better with my changeup and that working on it in the bullpen and on the side.”
Before the injury last season Sabathia held a 5.28 ERA with a 3-4 record.
