The Nationals have decided newcomer Max Scherzer will get the nod on opening day when Washington tees off against their NL East rival New York Mets.

Stephen Strasburg has earned the honor for the past three seasons, but the Nationals felt Scherzer should set the tone for the season.

“He’s a really good pitcher,” Nationals Manager Matt Williams said. “He’s confident. We’re confident in him.”

Scherzer signed a seven-year, $210 million contract this offseason with Washington after spending the last five seasons in Detroit.

Last year, Scherzer tossed a 3.15 ERA, struck out 252 batters, earned a spot on the American League All-Star team and finished fifth in Cy Young voting — He won the award in 2013.
