Stocks Fall Back After Wednesday’s Gains, Unemployment Claims Down from Last Week

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 117.16 to dip back below 18,000 and finish the day at 17,959.03.

The Nasdaq ended the session up 9.55 at 4,992.38, while the S&P 500 slipped 10.23 to 2,089.27.

Thursday was Apple’s first day trading on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The company replaced AT&T on the index on Thursday, but its stock dropped one dollar on the day.

Unemployment claims dropped by 1,000 from last week, the Labor Department said Thursday. 291,000 Americans filed for unemployment insurance, bringing the four-week moving average up 2,250 to 304,750.
