Speaking to reporters at his daily briefing, press secretary Josh Earnest suggested that the GOP missive was “an effort to inject partisan politics into a very serious foreign policy matter.”

Earnest called the letter both “unprecedented and inappropriate” although its originator, Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas has claimed he and other Republicans were not trying to undermine President Obama’s authority.

However, the White House spokesman said otherwise, charging Republicans with “attempting to sandbag the president of the United States in the midst of negotiations that he’s engaged in, not just in Iran but with our international partners.”

The talks between the so called P5+1 and Iran are expected to wrap up in weeks. Obama has publicly said that the likelihood of a deal was no better than fifty-fifty.
