SALT LAKE CITY – Two senior leaders with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are fighting serious medical issues.

According to a church spokesman, Elder L. Tom Perry will begin radiation treatment Friday morning after being diagnosed with cancer in the thyroid gland.

Perry is the second most senior apostle in terms of length of service in the Quorum of the Twelve, and the oldest living apostle.

Perry was hospitalized Wednesday for tests and observation following some breathing difficulties, Church spokesman Eric Hawkins said. The apostle was released to go home Wednesday night.

Elder Richard G. Scott, age 86, was hospitalized Thursday evening due to gastrointestinal bleeding. A spokesman says the bleeding was brought under control and he is resting comfortably.

Scott did not attend the LDS Church semi-annual General Conference in early April. He has served in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since October 1, 1988.

A church spokesman says the apostles are grateful for the prayers and kindnesses expressed on their behalf.
