ABERDEEN — A 7-year-old child was accidentally shot by another child Monday, according to the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials report a 7-year-old was transported to the emergency room at Harms Memorial Hospital in American Falls after the child was shot in the left arm by a 9-year-old. Sheriff deputies were contacted by the hospital and dispatched to 1651 South 2600 West where the incident occurred. When officers arrived it was determined the 9-year-old boy was moving a blanket that was covering a 22 caliber firearm.

The 9-year-old thought the gun was not loaded and when he dropped the hammer on the gun it discharged striking the 7-year-old in the left arm, according to a news release.

The parents already had called an ambulance and the 7-year-old was transported to Harms memorial in American Falls before the Sheriff’s Office was contacted.

The Bingham County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating this incident but the initial investigation has determined this to be an accident. The office will not be releasing the names of either child due to their age. More information about this incident will be released as it becomes available.
