Evacuation Order Lifted After SC Train Derailment

HaraldBiebel/iStock/Thinkstock(TRENTON, S.C.) — Most residents of the South Carolina town where a freight train derailed on Friday night have been allowed to return to their homes after a brief evacuation order.
According to the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, 39 train cars derailed in Trenton on Friday night. One of the cars, which did not leak, contained anhydrous ammonia, while a second containing ammonium nitrate spilled some of its contents. In the immediate aftermath, officials ordered the evaucation of the area near the scene.

All evacuated residents except those living on Salter Pond Road in Trenton, SC, are now able to return home.

Later, the SCEMD said, it was determined that no dangerous chemicals had spilled and that all residents — with the exception of those living on one street — were able to return to their homes.
