The move comes as a bit of a surprise as general manager Ron Hextall said he would take a “methodical” approach to evaluating the head coach position.

“I’m not going to make a quick decision to appease people, or to follow along like it’s supposed to be done. I’m going to do everything I can to do the due diligence that’s appropriate to make the decision. Once I get there, then we’ll let people know. I’m not going to make a hasty decision and look back and regret it. I’m going to do everything I can to gather all the information out there and make the right decision,” Hextall said Wednesday.

Berube was hired last season and amassed a record of 75-58-28, with just one playoff appearance.

”I think in the end, a coach’s job is to get the most out of his players, and in the end that’s the conclusion that I came to, was that that wasn’t the case,” Hextall said.
