The blast outside the consulate injured several others on Friday, but U.S. officials said no personnel at the consulate were hurt in the bombing.

The extremist group also claimed to have carried out bombings in Baghdad that killed more than two dozen people.

The attacks come as the hardline fighters are attempting to take over the western Iraqi city of Ramadi, where gunmen have seized villages in recent days.

More than 2,000 families have fled the city and are residing outside the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

However, Iraqi forces were able to repel the Islamic States assault on the northern city of Bajji, a key center for oil refining, with the help of U.S.-led airstrikes.
