RIGBY – A man was shot and killed by a Bonneville County deputy after officials said he drew a rifle on the deputy Monday night.

During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Jefferson County Sheriff Blair Olsen said 31-year-old Tyrell J. Larsen of Jefferson County was being pursued by a Bonneville County deputy when Larsen refused to pull over.

The chase ended around 11:45 p.m. on East 100 North in Jefferson County when Larsen’s 2012 Chevrolet pickup hit a four-foot thick concrete foundation.

Olsen said the deputy approached the pickup and Larsen drew a rifle. According to Olsen, the deputy told Larsen repeatedly to drop the weapon, but Larsen refused.

That’s when the deputy shot Larsen.

“To my knowledge, the nonlethal methods were giving (Larsen) a number of opportunities to lower his weapon and surrender,” said Olsen.

Larsen was transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The deputy, whose name has not been released, was not hurt and it doing okay, according to Olsen.

The Southeast Idaho Critical Incident Team is investigating the shooting.
