(NEW YORK) — New York Mets Closer Jenrry Mejia will be suspended 80 games after testing positive for the anabolic steroid Stanozolol, Major League Baseball announced.

Mejia had not pitched so far this season, having sat out Opening Day after claiming to have experienced elbow soreness.

“We were disappointed when informed of Jenrry’s suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program,” the Mets said in a statement. “We fully support MLB’s policy toward eliminating performance enhancing substances from the sport. As per the Joint Drug Program, we will have no further comment on this suspension.”

Last season, Mejia earned 28 saves after incumbent starter Bobby Parnell suffered an injury that required Tommy John surgery.

Mejia released a statement saying, “I can honestly say I have no idea how a banned substance ended up in my system.”
