Phil Hughes Excited for Opening Day Start
Published at(NEW YORK) — Twins pitcher Phil Hughes will make the first Opening Day start of his career on Monday when Minnesota takes on the Detroit Tigers.
Hughes will have a tough counterpart in David Price, but is looking forward to it.
“It’s very cool,” Hughes said this week about making the Opening Day start. “It’s something that I never had the opportunity to do in my career.”
“I’ve been a part of a lot of Opening Day’s and to see that kind of atmosphere is going to be great to be a part of.”
Hughes was 16-10 last season with a 3.52 ERA in his first season in Minnesota.
“It’s a little bit different,” Hughes said of the adjustments to pitching on Opening Day. “You have to time your routine. I’ll just kind of play it by ear, it should be a good atmosphere in Detroit.”
Hughes spent seven seasons with the New York Yankees before coming to Minnesota last year.
