“It’s a testament to the will and the resiliency of this team,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

The game clocked in at 6 hours, 49 minutes. It was the longest game played in the history of the Red Sox, and the second-longest in Yankees history.

The teams combined for 138 at-bats, 32 hits, 28 strikeouts and 627 pitches thrown by 17 pitchers.

“It feels worse than one loss, but thank goodness it’s only one,” Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner said afterward.

The game could have been over much earlier, as the Red Sox blew leads in the 9th 16th, and 18th inning.

With one out left in the top of the 19th, shortstop Xander Bogaerts singled to shallow right field. He wound up stealing second and then advanced to third base after a passed ball. Rookie outfielder Mookie Betts then hit a sac-fly to bring in the game-winning run.
