The bill ends the sustainable growth rate, a formula used to calculate doctors’ Medicare payments. Doctors were due to face 21 percent cuts in Medicare reimbursements if the bill wasn’t passed.

The bill now heads to President Obama’s desk.

“This is a bill that will provide better health care for seniors and real savings for taxpayers,” House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said last month when the House passed the bill. “This’ll be the first real entitlement reform that we’ve seen in nearly two decades, and that’s a big win for the American people.”
