Shaka Smart Accepts Texas Job
Published at(NEW YORK) — Shaka Smart is leaving Virginia Commonwealth for Texas, VCU sports information director Scott Day confirmed on Thursday.
Smart will take over for Rick Barnes, who mutually parted ways with the Longhorns last week.
Smart had at least 26 wins in six seasons with VCU and will owe the school a $500,000 buyout because he left before May 1.
Smart racked up 126 wins from 2009-15 and won the Atlantic 10 tournament this year.
Texas officials declined to comment on Smart’s hiring on Thursday.
