Stocks Climb Despite Higher Unemployment Claims
Published at(NEW YORK) — Thursday marked a second consecutive day of growth on Wall Street despite increased unemployment claim numbers released by the Labor Department.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 56.22 to a close of 17,958.73.
The Nasdaq rallied from early-session losses to close at 4,974.57, up 23.75 from its open, while the S&P 500 rose 9.29 to 2,091.19.
The Labor Department’s weekly update found 14,000 more Americans applied for unemployment benefits this past week, bringing the total number of claims to 281,000.
Also on Thursday, LinkedIn announced the purchase of online learning company Lynda. The purchase came at a cost of $1.5 billion.
