Uzo Aduba, who won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in the dramedy, understands why the show was picked up for another season, and why it’s so successful.

“I think people see a lot of themselves in it. And I think people find themselves surprisingly relating to a lot of these characters,” she said on Wednesday’s Good Morning America.

“Because the story that our creator Jenji [Kohan] is telling, it’s not just exclusively about inmates,” Aduba continued. “These are people’s mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, neighbors, employees, and people can relate to those struggles and the challenges of just trying to make it through every day. And I think also it’s this idea that sometimes good people — good people — can make mistakes.”

Aduba added that she loves portraying her emotionally- and mentally-challenged character because “she’s never afraid to go all the way to just really be vulnerable and open herself up regardless of what the cost is. And that’s…exciting to play because that’s just so freeing.”

Season three of Orange Is the New Black will be available on Netflix June 12.
