On April 2, 45-year-old Eric Harris, who had allegedly sold methamphetamine to undercover investigators, was set to meet with those investigators again to sell them a pistol and ammunition. When deputies attempted to arrest him, Harris fled. Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Deputy Robert Bates, 73, shot and killed Harris, even though he says he intended to use a stun gun on the man.

During the chase, Bates says he believed he had pulled his Taser from his tactical carrier, but had grabbed his service weapon instead. He fired one round, which killed Harris, the TCSO says. In the video, Bates can be heard saying “I shot him! I’m sorry.”

The TCSO says it has concluded its investigation into the shooting and has sent the information to the Tulsa County District Attorney for review.
