POCATELLO — The Idaho State Bengals opened up the 2015 Big Sky Softball tournament with a beat down a year in the making. Idaho State thumped the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah 14-3 in five innings Thursday afternoon at Miller Ranch Stadium.

It was on that very field last year, that Southern Utah shocked the Bengals in the title game. Something shortstop Hailey Breakwell remembers. “I think there was a feeling that we deserved to get them back for that. And I think we did,” she said.

The Thunderbirds looked like they might do it again when Kylee Wolf started the game with a lead off home run. Idaho State pitcher Sophie Slagle gave up four hits and three runs in the first two innings. Head coach Julie Wright wasn’t worried. “Her demeanor wasn’t ‘oh gosh’ it was ‘give me the ball. I am done with this,’” she said.

The offense picked up the slack. Exploding for six runs in the second inning. That helped calm Slagle down. “It’s awesome to know that you have your offense to back you up. Especially in that first and second inning when I was struggling.” Slagle would dominate from that point on. She didn’t allow a hit after the second inning and tied a career high with 9 strikeouts.

The offense was just as dominant scoring in every inning except the third. The game ended on a grand slam by Ashlyn Ames. Vicky Galasso and Maddy Hickman also hit home runs in the game. The Bengals are 10-0 this season when they hit multiple home runs.

The Bengals will now play either Sacramento State or Weber State at 10am Friday.
