One man dead, one missing in separate Snake River boating accidents
Published at | Updated atST. ANTHONY — A young man was killed in a canoeing accident on the Henrys Fork of the Snake River Monday.
The Fremont County Sheriff’s Department, Search and Rescue and EMS, along with Madison County’s Sheriff Department and EMS responded to a report of a capsized canoe in the Salem area of the Henrys Fork at 10:30 a.m.
One male subject had gotten trapped in a log jam in the middle of the river where he was then pulled out by family members and first responders, according to a Fremont County news release.
The male was transported to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The name is currently being withheld at this time until next of kin can be notified.
Additionally, the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office reports that Steve Ryan Woods, 38, of Ogden, Utah is missing following a Sunday boating accident on the upper section of the Snake River near Conant Valley Boat ramp.
Deputies report that prior to the boat launch the boat struck a partially submerged cottonwood tree. The boat overturned, three of the four people in the boat got to shore. Woods was last seen as the boat overturned.
Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office Dive team, Backcountry Deputies and Search and Rescue responded Sunday. The search was expanded Monday with assistance from Swan Valley EMS, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Bonneville County Search and Rescue and Dive team, also the medical helicopter out of Rexburg, along with a Bonneville County Reserve Deputy flying a private aircraft.
The office had a total of five boats, two jet skis and 28 people on the water Monday. The recovery efforts will continue into tomorrow. If anyone around the river sees what looks like a person in the water, please contact the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office at 529-1299.
