Wimbledon: Serena Williams Advances with First Round Win
Published at | Updated at(LONDON) — Serena Williams inched her way closer to a Grand Slam on Monday, defeating Margarita Gasparyan in the first round of Wimbledon.
She beat Gasparyan in two straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
If she takes Wimbledon and then the US Open later this summer, Williams would become the first player to win all four legs of the Grand Slam in the same year since Steffi Graf did it in 1988. Williams defeated Maria Sharapova and Lucie Safarova earlier this year to win the Australian Open and French Open, respectively.
“I don’t feel any pressure to win all four. I’ve been saying that, but I really don’t feel that pressure. I mean maybe if I were to happen to win here then maybe I might start feeling it after that,” Williams said after the match.
The No. 1 seed will next face off against Timea Babos.
