Book review: ‘Decorating for Real Life’ gives helpful tips for personal home decor

"DECORATING FOR REAL LIFE," by Wendy Hyde, Plain Sight Publishing, $24.99, 308 pages (nf)

“Decorating for Real Life” by Wendy Hyde gives readers a peek into her home and those of 10 other women, sharing their personal styles and decorating techniques. The focus of the book is creating family friendly spaces and environments using practical ideas to make a dream home.

The contributors explain why they chose their particular decor and include information on topics such as: "What does this space say about me," "What makes this space family friendly," "What fears need to be overcome" and "What compromises are required and addressed." Hyde also shares how readers can implement the ideas in their homes, including do-it-yourself guides and tips for shopping.

Decor designs include "charming and cheerful" by Shelley Smith, "curated and cultivated" by Anne-Marie Barton, "cozy and comfortable" by Jennifer Hadfield, "cool and current" by Kara Fuhriman, "petite and pretty" by Hyde, "luxe and livable" by Rowena Hyldahl, "bright and beachy" by Aly Brook, "simple and serene" by Paige Knudsen, "fresh and fabulous" by Autumn Clemon, "global and glam" from Megan Hobson and "clean and contemporary" by Michelle Hinckley.

Hyde also includes a brief "Decorating 101" section that discusses space and color planning, accessorizing and furniture layout tools, including additional paper for readers to map their living space and considerable tips for maintaining safety. There is variety in each of the homes’ decor to encourage and inspire any reader in his or her decorating endeavors.

“Decorating for Real Life” has such a variety of styles and tips that there is something for everyone, and it's interesting to see what can be done with a particular space.

Hyde's blog The Shabby Nest, which she began in 2008, was chosen as the best decorating blog in 2011 by Country Living magazine.
