VIRAL VIDEO: Americans don’t know why we celebrate 4th of July
Published at | Updated atA video featuring media analyst Mark Dice asking beach goers in San Diego, Calif. some basic questions about Independence Day has gone viral.
Their answers are — well, you be the judge.
Here’s what actually happened on July 4, 1776:
– In the midst of the American Revolution, the 13 colonies secured separation from Great Britain on July 2, when they voted on the resolution of independence.
– It was not until two days later that they approved the final details of the Declaration of Independence.
– July 4 is shown on the historic document, and is the day Americans celebrate cutting ties with their colonists ever since.
– The date has long been disputed, but Founding Fathers Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all wrote letters and signed them on that date.
– Even though the Declaration was approved on July 4, it wasn’t approved until almost a month later.
