Wimbledon 2015: Bob Woodruff Goes Inside the Hallowed Tennis Championship

Andraz Gregoric/iStock/Thinkstock(LONDON) — Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and arguably the most anticipated of the four Grand Slam events every year.
It takes place every summer in London and attracts about half a million spectators over the two-week competition. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event still played on grass, and boasts 41 courts, including 19 championships grass courts.
Inside the gates, spectators can watch the best players in the world go head to head, including Americans Serena and Venus Williams.
This year, ABC News’ Bob Woodruff goes on an insider’s tour of the historic tournament. He gets up close to the famous grass courts and gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the grounds, which are hallowed grounds for tennis aficionados.
For the players, Wimbledon traditions include a strict dress code and a team of highly trained ball girls and boys. For spectators, snacks of strawberries and cream and a drink called Pimm’s are de rigueur while watching matches.
On the hottest day in Wimbledon’s history, Woodruff watches as top-seeded Serena Williams defeats Timea Babos of Hungary. Both Williams sisters won second-round matches on July 1. That means with a few more wins, they could meet on the court in the fourth round.
Over the course of the 2015 championships, £26.75 million in prize money will be awarded to competitors.
