Here’s who sang what:

Nicki Minaj opened the show and was joined by a surprise appearance by her former Twitter sparring partner Taylor Swift. The two sang a bit of Nicki’s “The Night Is Still Young” together before launching into Taylor’s “Bad Blood” and ending the performance with a hug.

Right after Nicki and Taylor’s lovefest, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis took it to the streets of downtown Los Angeles for their debut live performance of their new single, “Downtown.”

The Weeknd appeared on a red-lit stage to sing his current hit “Can’t Feel My Face,” and ended the performance by dancing amidst some dangerous-looking pyrotechnics. Even Kanye was on his feet for this one.

In her first ever VMA performance, Demi Lovato sang “Cool for the Summer” on an outdoor stage and was joined by her pal Iggy Azalea. She ended the performance by crowd-surfing on a giant inflatable pool.

Justin Bieber made an emotional VMA comeback. He busted out some killer dance moves for hisSkrillex/Diplo hit “Where Are U Now,” and flew in the air for his new single “What Do You Mean?” When his performance was over, the Biebs broke down in tears.

With guitar in hand, Tori Kelly took the stage to sing “Should’ve Been Us,” and hit every note.

Pharrell Williams hit the outdoor stage to sing “Freedom,” in a show seemingly inspired by Elvis Presley’s performance of “Jailhouse Rock” in the 1957 movie of the same name.

In perhaps the most unexpected pairing of the night, A$AP Rocky was joined on stage by Twenty One Pilots. They did a medley of Twenty One Pilots’ “HeavyDirtySoul” and “Lane Boy,” and A$AP’s “M” and “L$D.”

And to cap off the night, Miley sang a brand new song called “Dooo It!” backed by drag queens and The Flaming Lips. Right after the performance, she announced that her new album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz,  is now available online for free.
