In the September issue of Fast Company, Paltrow said the term was created by Elise Loehnen, the editorial director of her website, Goop.

“When I announced that I was separating on the website, [Loehnen] titled the piece ‘Conscious Uncoupling,’ and I had no idea,” she explained.

Although she didn’t come up with the term for her divorce, Paltrow said she’s very hands-on with the content of Goop and it often surprises her when she reads some of the backlash she’s personally receives. Paltrow got flack for suggesting that her readers purchase a juicer that costs more than $4,000 — an item most of her readers can’t afford — and for even suggesting they try “vaginal steaming.”

“I do think a lot of the misperception comes from people who haven’t actually gone on the site, because a lot of the things you see or hear, we’re like, ‘We never said that, never wrote that, that’s not the price point, or this was totally out of context,’” Paltrow clarified.  “It seems that when people really engage, they understand who we are and what we’re doing.”

Paltrow said that some members on her team do get frazzled by the backlash, but she reminds them of one thing. “I just tell them that I think we are creating interesting discussions,” she said in the magazine.
