NAMPA – A woman is behind bars after police say she tried to drown an infant in an irrigation ditch, according to KTVB.

The Boise TV station reports Nampa police responded to the 400 block of Chicago Avenue just before 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Investigators say a passerby reported seeing 22-year-old Regina Dilworth standing in the ditch and submerging the child. The passerby then jumped in the water and rescued the infant from Dilworth, according to police.

Officers say Dilworth was speaking incoherently when they arrived on scene and they believe she was under the influence of an illegal substance, reports KTVB.

A four-year-old child was also present during the incident. Both children were taken into protective custody.

Officers have not said what relationship Dilworth has to the children.

Dilworth was booked into the Canyon County Jail. She is charged with two counts of injury to a child.
