Published at | Updated atBURLEY – Several people were injured when lightning struck a football jamboree at Burley High School, according to the Twin Fall Times-News
The newspaper reports Cassia County dispatch received calls that a 13-year-old boy, a coach, a 32-year-old man and a fourth person were all hurt when the lightning struck around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
“People were running out of the bleachers as fast as they could,” Jon Loper, a coach, said. “All the coaches had players lay on the ground until they felt it was safe.”
Loper said his team was in the middle of a game when the lightning hit. There were as many as 80 kids and 20 adults on the field.
KMVT.com reports the strike created a golf ball size hole in the field and some stadium lights were shattered.
“Luckily, no one was severely injured when it happened,” Loper said. “It could have been tragic.”
