His new music drama We Are Your Friends, in which he plays an aspiring DJ, was a major flop over the weekend. It earned an estimated 1.8 million dollars on more than 23 hundred screens, ranking as one of the weakest debuts ever for a film with such a wide release.

The number-one movie, for the third weekend in a row, was the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, which raised 13.2 million dollars.

The religious drama War Room opened in second place, collecting 11 million dollars in 11-hundred-plus locations. In other words, it had a much better debut than We Are Your Friends.

The Owen Wilson thriller No Escape took fourth place, with 8.3 million. The film has made 10.3 million since it arrived in theaters last Wednesday.
