Drone Crashes Into Stands During US Open Match
Published at | Updated at(NEW YORK) — A drone crashed inside of Louis Armstrong Stadium during the US Open in New York Thursday night, officials said.
According to reps for the tennis tournament, the incident happened just before 8:30 p.m.
Tennis officials said a drone was spotted flying from the east into the southwest corner of the stadium during the match between Flavia Pennetta and Monica Niculescu.
There were no spectators in the immediate area and there were no injuries.
ABC affiliate WABC-TV in New York reports that a high school science teacher in New York City was charged with operating the drone. Daniel Verley, 26, was found at a marine a short distance away in the aftermath of the crash and was also charged with reckless endangerment.
