According to the U.S. Olympic Committee, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to support a bid to bring the games back to California. The 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta were the most recent games in the U.S.

The bid, announced by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, USOC Chairman Larry Probst, USOC CEO Scott Blackmun, and other city officials and representatives, is called “environmentally sustainable” and would feature the vast majority of proposed venues within 30 minutes travel of the proposed Athletes’ Village.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Los Angeles as our U.S. bid city for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Blackmun said in a statement. “L.A. has proven experience in hosting the Games, and knows how to deliver world-class events for athletes and an extraordinary experience for fans.”

Garcetti called it “an honor for any city to host the Olympic Games,” and said his city was “uniquely prepared for this task.”

L.A. has previously hosted the Summer Games in 1932 and 1984.

The announcement comes just two weeks before the September 15 deadline for cities to submit bids to the International Olympic Committee.
