Dog dies after being left at shelter dropbox

IDAHO FALLS– One of the two chihuahuas left in the dropbox at the Idaho Falls Animal Shelter died soon after staff found them.

Staff found the two chihuahuas, one male and one female, after they were dropped off the night of Tuesday, Oct. 6.

“When we pulled them out they were scared to death!” according to a post on the shelter’s Facebook page.

The male chihuahua become violently ill. Workers did all they could for the dog, but Wednesday they had to put the dog down, shelter officials said.

“We have animals in the dropbox all the time,” said Animal Control Officer Kerry Watts. “Some come in sick, but not all the time.

No information was left with the dogs, and this made it harder for the shelter to care for them. Paperwork is available at the dropbox for people to provide information on dogs they have found.

The dropbox is not a place to surrender sick or unwanted animals, Watts said.

“Bring them in the front door,” said Watts. “We need the info to care for and help them get adopted faster. There is a $22 surrender fee, but we use it to help the dogs.”

The chihuahua’s sister will be held in quarantine for 10 days to make sure she is healthy and then will be up for adoption. It is unknown what caused the other chihuahua to become so ill.
