Serena Williams to Withdraw from Final Events of 2015

Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Serena Williams’ season is likely over, the world’s number one women’s tennis player announced early Thursday, withdrawing from the China Open and the Women’s Tennis Association finals.
Williams’ Grand Slam run was ended with a loss to Roberta Vinci at the U.S. Open last month. In a statement, the 21-time major winner said that her season has been “at times exhilarating, at times disappointing,” admitting that she played through numerous injuries for much of the year.
“I want to compete as well as I can, for as long as I can,” Williams continued, explaining that she would pull out of the final events of the 2015 season to address her health.
“This is a very difficult decision,” she admitted, “but one ultimately made because of love of the game.”
