Kerr underwent a procedure to repair a ruptured disc in July and had a follow-up surgery in September, according to the team website. He continues to undergo rehabilitation and recovery in the aftermath of his surgeries.

“At this point, the most important thing is to make sure Steve is healthy, completely recovered and ready for not only the rigors of a long NBA season, but day-to-day life in general,” Warriors General Manager Bob Myers said. He noted that the recovery process is not expected to be longterm, though no precise timeline was provided.

“After the first two days of training camp, I realized I need to take a step back and focus on my rehabilitation,” Kerr explained.

In Kerr’s absence, the team’s lead assistant coach Luke Walton will serve as interim coach.
