IDAHO FALLS – It seems that everybody has heard about Black Friday and Cyber Monday but you might not be aware of the a new nationwide shopping event.

It’s called Small Business Saturday and holiday shoppers are encouraged to visit and spend money at local stores on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Several businesses in east Idaho are participating this year in an effort to boost the local economy.

“The local guys always work extra hard and try extra hard to get that personal thing going,” Shane Murphy, the owner of Kool Beanz and Java Express, said. “We try very hard to make sure you’re getting a great product.”

Small Business Saturday began as a nationwide movement five years ago. More stores in east Idaho participate as the years go by.

“Small businesses make up 96.5 percent of all businesses in Idaho,” Michelle Holt, the CEO of the Greater Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce, said. “They have a huge impact on our Idaho economy.”

Bill’s Bike and Run in Idaho Falls is looking forward to Small Business Saturday. The company is offering special deals and extra workers will be on hand to help everyone who walks in the door.

“We look to provide better service and higher quality products,” said Gray Augustus, the owner of Bill’s Bike and Run. “I have nothing against big box businesses but small businesses generally put tons more money back into the community.”
