LDS apostle Quentin L. Cook to speak at BYU-Idaho commencement

REXBURG — Elder Quentin L. Cook, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will address 1,997 graduates (a 16 percent increase over last fall) at Brigham Young University-Idaho’s Fall Commencement on December 18. The event will be held at 5:45 p.m. in the BYU-Idaho Center.

The university will award 534 associate degrees and 1,490 bachelor’s degrees. Of the graduates, 1,219 are females and 778 are males. About 49 percent have served as missionaries for the Church.

Elder Quentin L. Cook was sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in October 2007. Cook was first called as a General Authority in April 1996. As a Seventy Cook served in the Area Presidency in the Philippines, as President of the Pacific Islands and the North America Northwest Areas, and as Executive Director of the Missionary Department.

Before his call as a General Authority, Cook served in number of church callings including as a full-time missionary in the British Mission, bishop, stake president, Regional Representative and Area Authority.

Cook received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Utah State University, and a Juris Doctor degree from Stanford University. Prior to his call as a full-time Church leader, Elder Cook was vice chairman of Sutter Health System. He had previously served as president and chief executive officer of a California healthcare system. Prior to that he was a business lawyer and managing partner of a San Francisco Bay Area law firm. Elder Cook and his wife Mary are the parents of three children, and they have 11 grandchildren.

Accompanying Elder Cook at BYU-Idaho’s fall commencement will be Elder Kim B. Clark, commissioner of the Church Educational System and member of the First Quorum of the Seventy. Clark served as president of BYU-Idaho from 2005-15.
