Skyline bands to perform at Disneyland
Published at | Updated atIDAHO FALLS — Two Skyline High School bands have been invited to perform and record at Disneyland in April 2016.
The invitation comes after an audition video was produced by Skyline yearbook in early November. Band director Bob Dunmire says there are other traveling competition opportunities for high school bands, like the Heritage Program. But the Disney Performing Arts Program was especially enticing because the “contest” is complete once a group is selected. This means the players can hit the road and enjoy the performing in California.
Not only will Skyline’s jazz and symphonic bands play onstage for Disney and California Adventure park attendees, they’ll jump in the studio to get a small taste of what it’s like to record in the professional world. All band members will wear headphones and play for a click track, then immediately experience playback of their own performances set to familiar scenes of Disney films.
Of course, the trip isn’t free. The bands will be hosting an all-ages fundraising jazz dance Feb. 27 at the Idaho Falls Elks lodge. Tickets will be available through band members. The public can also catch the groups at a soon-to-be scheduled date in March at Skyline’s main gym.
“My wheels are turning,” Dunmire says, as he dreams up the 25-minute performance lineup for each of the bands. He’s planning a contrasting program, considering a vocal performance with the jazz band and “Bluebells of Scotland” on trombone.
Senior trombonist and euphonium player Isaac Snarr says Dunmire “gets us into it and brings out the best in us.”
Snarr also credits the bands cohesiveness to the years many of them have played together.
“I have an exceptional senior class,” Dunmire said.
