POCATELLO – The Idaho Museum of Natural History has joined the Project Feederwatch citizen science project and invites the Pocatello community get involved.

Project Feederwatch seeks to assist scientists track population and abundance trends in birds during winter. Each year from Nov. to April, a variety of bird watchers sign up and monitor their bird feeders, record information and submit it to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

“Lots of people around town feed birds in their backyards,” said Becky Hansis-O’Neill, museum education specialist in a news release. “By opening up the museum, we are hoping to recruit more backyard birders to join Project Feederwatch. We want to provide support to people who are interested but want to see how Project Feederwatch works before they commit to monitoring a feeder.”

Sign ups for Project Feederwatch are available to anyone interested during the duration of the project, which ends April 8. There is an $18 fee for a research kit that will be delivered in the mail.
