IDAHO FALLS — Now that the turkey high and sugar rush are over, more than a few people are concerned about the extra pounds that somehow appeared during the holidays.

Well you can stop worrying, because gyms and fitness clubs across eastern Idaho are prepared to help you lose those holidays pounds. Below is a list of weight-loss classes at gyms in Idaho Falls, Ammon and Rexburg. Happy exercising!

1. Olympic Lifting

The Olympic Lifting course offered at Crossfit Edify teaches basic barbell movements to start. Owner Jessie Smith said the class is not like a typical weightlifting course.

“It’s very explosive, and very fast,” Smith said. “These course basics include lifts such as the clean, which targets the hamstrings, the jerk, targeting the shoulders, the snatch, and the squat.”

CrossFit Edify also is offering a new speed agility course for those who want to learn correct sprinting and running techniques.

Prices vary for memberships. Discounts are offered to police officers, firefighters and those in the military. You can try one week of training at CrossFit Edify for free.

2. Kranking or Krankcycle class

Starting Friday, Jan. 1 at noon The Apple Athletic Club is offering a new Krankcycle course. A Krankcycle is a like an indoor bicycle for your arms instead of your legs. It’s a full body cardio exercise. You can burn up to 1,000 or more calories in 30 minutes.

According to Krankcycle.com, “kranking” gives athletes the ability to improve cardio fitness and train at high levels while resting the primary (leg) muscles.

The first fitness class is always free. You can also amp it up to four fitness classes for $30 a month. Call and ask for Annette Hayner, director of group fitness, for more details.

3. Pound

If you want to drum to high intensity beats while toning up, then POUND might be the class for you. Gold’s Gym’s POUND course is a “full body cardio dance session that combines light resistance with constant drumming,” said Group Fitness Manager Keri Hennefer.
POUNDfit.com says POUND is a fusion between cardio, Pilates, and isometric movements. Participants incorporate continual upper body movements and dance with weighted drumsticks or Ripstix. You can burn between 400 to 900 calories during one session.

The first POUND class is free. Contact Gold’s Gym for information about the course.

4. Anti-gravity Yoga

Super Fly Fitness takes yoga to new heights. According to SuperFlyFitness.com, the anti-gravity yoga fundamentals course combines an upper body and core workout while being suspended in mid-air on a silk hammock. The fundamentals class is just the beginning with seven total anti-gravity course options available. Other anti-gravity courses involve meditation and inversion therapy.

5. Krav Maga

Payne Athletic Company in Rexburg is one of the few gyms in eastern Idaho that teaches Krav Maga an aggressive martial arts course. Originally Krav Maga was developed for the Israeli Military, but the techniques have been modified for common practice and self-defense purposes. Payne said the martial art system draws from many styles of hand-to-hand combat.

“It really is kind of a mix. They draw from Muay Thai, they draw from Aikido, they draw from Judo, Jiu-Jitsu and boxing,” Payne said.

For the month of January. Payne Athletic Company is having a buy-one-get-one-free deal for personal training sessions. Call or visit the website for details on Krav Maga or a membership at Payne Athletic Co.

CrossFit has been all the rage lately, and for good reason. CrossFit is designed with interesting, varied, high-intensity workouts so the body doesn’t become used to the monotony of one type of exercise program. Trent Shaw at Teton CrossFit in Rexburg said the overarching theme of CrossFit is “constantly varied, functional, high-intensity fitness.”

Shaw said this 60-minute course is instructor led and all athletes can personalize their fitness goals. Teton Cross fit has student discounts, as well as discounts for firefighters, EMS personnel and police.

7. Koko Fit Club
