REXBURG — Madison High School’s Rachel Morrin has been awarded the Gatorade State Girls Cross Country of the Year Award for the 2015-16 season.

“This is really exciting for her and our school,” Madison head coach, Steve Barrus said. “I found out late Wednesday night and showed her the clip Gatorade sent us this morning which created a lot of excitement with the kids who found out about it.”

Morrin will receive a trophy and Madison High School will also receive at trophy and a banner.

She is the second recipient of the national Gatorade award in the school’s history. Josh Fuller received the award for basketball in 2009.

The Gatorade State Girls Cross Country Runners of the Year were selected based on athletic production and impact in the 2015-16 season, according to a news release. Winners demonstrated high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

During her sophomore season, Morrin went undefeated in all her cross country meets including the 5A district and state individual championships. After her season was over she also competed in the Nike Cross Country Northwest Regional championships placing 12th.

She has maintained a 4.0 GPA, is an accomplished pianist and volunteers locally.

Her dedication to running is demonstrated by the hundreds of miles she runs during the off season, Barrus said. Most summer mornings she can be seen running on the county roads around Rexburg.

“Sometimes cross country doesn’t get a lot of recognition,” said Barrus. “This award for her will help the sport locally and she really deserves it.”

The Madison girls cross country team took the district championship this year and placed fourth at the state meet.
