Deputies: Kids hurt after medicated woman smashes into mailbox

IDAHO FALLS — An Idaho Falls woman was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 12, after she crashed her suburban into a brick mailbox, injuring her three children.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said Roxie Viele, 35, was under the influence of several medications and was too impaired to drive. She was booked into the Bonneville County Jail on three counts of misdemeanor injury to a child and one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence.

Sheriff Sgt. Bryan Lovell told EastIdahoNews.com that deputies responded to the accident at West Riverview Drive and North Fifth West on Tuesday morning. When they arrived, Viele was slurring her speech and presenting signs of being under the influence, he said.

Viele admitted to having taken several over-the-counter and prescription medications. She voluntarily submitted to a blood test to determine her level of intoxication, Lovell said. The results of those tests are still pending.

Three children in the vehicle, ages 10, 8 and 7, sustained minor injuries, including scrapes and bruises, Lovell said.

An ambulance was dispatched to the crash, but neither Viele nor the children were transported.

Following the arrest, the children went with a neighbor who was at the scene.

Viele has a preliminary hearing scheduled Jan. 27.
