Recently retired Bonneville County K9 officer passes away

IDAHO FALLS — A police K9 that retired less than two weeks ago has passed away.

Bonneville County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bryan Lovell said K9 Unit Bart died due to an unforeseen medical condition on Thursday, Jan. 7.

Bart was born June 20, 2002, and served the Sheriff’s Office with handler Sgt. Chris Smith from 2005 until the end of December 2015. Lovell said Bart was instrumental is taking hundreds of pounds of drugs off the street throughout his career as well as winning multiple K9 Competitions around the state.

“The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office is indeed grateful for Bart’s dedicated service alongside Sgt, Smith for all these years and he will be missed,” Lovell said Saturday in a news release.

Bart was officially retired on Dec. 30, along with K9 Unit Zeke, at a celebration at the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue building in Idaho Falls.
