Utah man burned, dog killed in southeast Idaho hot spring

PRESTON — A Utah man sustained third-degree burns when he jumped into a fenced-off hot spring to save his dog.

Daniel Holland, 25, of Salt Lake City, was at the Maple Grove Mineral Hot Springs in Franklin County earlier this month.

While at the hot springs, a dog owned by Holland’s girlfriend, Valerie Mounarath, jumped into a spring that was off limits, because it was too hot. Holland entered the pool in an effort to save the canine and was severely burned.

Holland was transported by Mounarath to seek medical treatment at a hospital, however, her car crashed into a snowbank on the way.

A patron at the resort placed a 911 call and the Franklin County Sheriff’s department and ambulance were dispatched to help Holland.

Holland sustained third-degree burns and was hospitalized for two days, his father told the Preston Citizen. Resort owner, Jay Stocking said he was told that the dog died from its injuries.

“It was an unfortunate thing and we hope the best for him,” Stocking said.

The pool that the man jumped into was marked with warning signs. The pool is the source of water that is pumped into four patron pools. The water is cooled as it runs through a pipe that juts into the Oneida Narrows Reservoir before emptying into the soaking pools, Stocking said.

Water in the source pond ranges in temperature depending on the weather, but is usually 130 degrees near the shore to 160 degrees in the middle, Stocking said. The patron pools range in temperature from 100 degrees to 106 degrees.

Maple Grove Mineral Hot Springs is located several miles up the Oneida Narrows where several natural hot springs run into the Oneida Narrows Reservoir.
