City of Rexburg issues reminder about how to properly use a roundabout
Published at | Updated atREXBURG — The City of Rexburg Traffic and Safety Committee has issued a reminder for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians about how to properly use a roundabout.
Vehicles
- Slow down.
- Rexburg has 15 mph speed limit signs displayed at the roundabout.
- Check for pedestrians in or about to enter cross-walks (Cross-walks are placed one car length before roundabout).
- Check for safe entry gap before arriving at the roundabout.
- Enter roundabout when there is a safe entry gap.
- Do not stop at yield sign before checking for entry gap.
- Activate turn signal when approaching desired exit. This informs drivers and pedestrians of your intentions.
- Yield only to pedestrians or emergency vehicles when exiting.
- Do not stop or slow down for any other reason.
- Do not stop in the roundabout for emergency vehicles; pull over after exiting.
- Think ahead; be aware of where you want to go and which lane will allow such a movement.
Cyclists
- Navigate the roundabout like a car would.
- Ride in the center of the lane you occupy.
- Use proper hand signals to exit.
- If uncomfortable with riding through the roundabout, exit the roadway and use cross-walks to cross the intersection.
- Become a pedestrian and walk bike across the crosswalk.
Pedestrians
- Be aware of traffic in roundabout and approaching the roundabout.
- Identify gaps in traffic which will be safe to walk through.
- If roundabout is busy be use caution; stand on the curb or just in the cross-walk.
- Drivers are required to yield if pedestrian is in the crosswalk.
- Pedestrians are required to enter the cross-walk in a safe manner and cross swiftly.
Note: Studies show that drivers are more likely to yield to pedestrians when entering the roundabout and when traveling at a slower speed.
